Big Bin events record 50,000 visits
With 50,000 users since 2006, Big Bins have big popularity.
"Edmontonians take great pride in our city and we don't want to see our river valley and roadways being used as places to dispose of unwanted things," said Councillor Bryan Anderson. "Big Bin events make it easy for Edmontonians to get rid of large bulky items and are an important part of keeping our city clean."
Councillor Anderson rolled up his sleeves for the occasion and helped the fifty-thousandth customer load their waste at the Millwoods Town Centre Big Bin Event. He also presented the lucky resident with a year’s supply of blue bags, compost made at Edmonton’s Waste Management Centre and a pair of Edmonton Eskimos tickets.
Edmontonians have come out in droves to dispose of items too large for regular collection. Since their start, Big Bin events have attracted 49,549 visitors and collected 7.8 tonnes of waste, the equivalent of 600 Edmonton Transit Service buses. As of September 10, this year’s Big Bin events have had 10,278 visitors and collected 1.8 tonnes of waste.
Big Bin events are part of the City of Edmonton’s Capital City Clean Up activities. “Everyone wants to live in a safe, clean and inviting community,” said Don Belanger, acting program manager for the City’s Capital City Clean Up program. “Get involved in your community, clean up your neighbourhood before the snow falls and get a jump on a clean Edmonton in the spring.”
The last Big Bin event for the year will be at Commonwealth Stadium on September 18 and 19, from 9am to 5pm..
