Bahá’í Community Celebrates Its Founder’s Birth with Display at City Hall

November 10, 2010

The Bahá’í community in Edmonton today unveiled a special display at City Hall honouring the birth of the founder of the Bahá’í Faith, Bahá’u’lláh.

The display is part of the City’s Celebrating our Faiths program – developed jointly with the Edmonton Interfaith Centre for Education and Action to create a greater awareness and understanding of Edmonton’s diverse faith communities.

The program seeks broader understanding of Edmonton’s various faiths through education, events and displays at City Hall. Displays depicting different faiths are rotated on a regular basis. Since 2006 over 17 different faiths have been featured.

Mayor Stephen Mandel in welcoming the Bahá’í display to City Hall said Edmonton’s diversity of faiths and cultures strengthen this dynamic, growing city. “Edmonton is made up of a diverse mix of people whose roots stretch across the world, and that’s one of the reasons our city is so rich and vibrant. Events like this are really valuable because they provide the opportunity for Edmontonians to learn more about the different faiths and experiences we share.”

The display depicts the life of Bahá’u’lláh who was born on November 12. Marie Gervais, organizer of the event to launch the display at City Hall says one of the reasons the Interfaith program is so valuable is that it contributes toward greater understanding amongst people of all faiths and backgrounds. “A basic tenet of Baha’u’llah’s teaching is the establishment of a just society complete with laws and principles for the establishment of a peaceful world. It is this aspect of justice that first attracted me to the Baha’i Faith over 30 years ago.”

The display at City Hall will run from November 10 – 30. All Celebrating our Faiths displays at City Hall are open to viewing on weekdays from 7am to 10pm, Saturdays from 9am to 5pm and Sundays and holidays from 11am to 5pm.
