Treecycling in Edmonton

December 24, 2008

For the 18th consecutive year, the City of Edmonton will be collecting natural Christmas trees for recycling.

Residents are asked to place their trees out for recycling on Monday, January 12, when the City will begin collecting them. Trees will be picked up within two weeks, but not necessarily on the resident’s regular waste collection day.

The City of Edmonton converts Christmas trees to woodchips for landscaping projects and for composting at the Edmonton Waste Management Centre. For Christmas trees to be acceptable for chipping, all ornaments, tinsel, garlands, nails, screws and tree stands must be removed. Residents are asked to place their unbagged trees on their sides and beside their garbage bags. Extra large trees should be cut into two-metre (6 ft.) lengths.

Apartment and condo residents must take their natural Christmas trees to a community recycling depot between December 29 and January 23.  They can also be taken to Edmonton Eco Stations from January 2 to 31 during regular winter business hours – Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Christmas trees should not be placed in or near apartment recycling bins or waste bins. For information about the nearest depot accepting trees, residents can call 311.

Approximately 15,629 trees (168 tonnes) were collected for recycling in 2007.
