City of Edmonton Helps Everyone Stay Active
December 18, 2008
The holiday season can be a difficult time for people trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle. It is also a time when many people start thinking about New Year’s resolutions.
For those on a limited budget, cost can be an obstacle to getting active, but it doesn’t have to be.
The City of Edmonton allows qualified low-income residents the opportunity to get fit and have fun through its leisure access program. Under the program, participants get unlimited free admissions to participating City recreation facilities, including:
- City of Edmonton leisure centres
- Fort Edmonton Park
- Muttart Conservatory
- Valley Zoo
Participants can also register for programs at lower rates. A 75 per cent discount is available when children and youth are registered in a maximum of four programs or when adults are registered in a maximum of three programs.
In order to qualify for the program, participants must meet the low-income cut off set by Statistics Canada. Participants may also qualify if they participate in the Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH) program, receive income support, have an Alberta Child Health Benefit card or have an Alberta Works Health Benefit card.
“This is an excellent way for Edmontonians to stay fit regardless of income level. Programs like this help people stay connected with their community and support health and wellness” said Greg Witt, Supervisor, Customer Services, Community Services.
The leisure access program began in January 2006 and has helped more than 20,000 people. For application forms and program information call 780-496-4918 or see Related Links.
