The North Saskatchewan – Yours to Protect

June 13, 2009

New signs have been installed at City boat launches to remind residents to protect the North Saskatchewan River, one of Edmonton’s best known resources. Mayor Mandel and representatives from HSBC Bank Canada and EPCOR Water Services unveiled the signs at Rundle Park as part of River Day festivities.

“Edmonton's River Valley is one of our best resources, and all Edmontonians must take responsibility for its protection,” said Mayor Mandel. “These signs are a reminder that we all need to respect and take care of this truly magnificent resource.”

Every year, the City removes several thousand kilograms of large and small debris such as shopping carts, plastic bags and car tires from the river.

Mayor Mandel says litter and illegal dumping harm wildlife and negatively affects the quality of Edmonton’s water supply. To help, Capital City Clean Up operates the River Clean Up initiative. Under the program, City staff remove waste from the river and educate the public about the importance of protecting the resource.

The signs encourage Edmontonians to help protect the natural habitat through the message “Yours to protect”. They also highlight some dos and don’ts for keeping the river clean and contain information about the North Saskatchewan watershed, as well as a map of the watershed’s area.

HSBC Bank Canada and EPCOR Water Services provided funds which helped produce these signs. City crews have installed them at boat launches along the river.

Designated a Canadian Heritage River in 1989, the North Saskatchewan River is a glacial-fed river flowing east from the Canadian Rockies to central Saskatchewan.

Over a million people count on the North Saskatchewan for their drinking water.
