Southgate Pedway Open to the Public
October 21, 2009
Walkway offers safe crossing of 111th Street.
The overhead pedestrian walkway above 111th Street at the new Southgate LRT Station is open to public service as of October 21, 2009.
While Southgate LRT Station and Century Park LRT Station won’t be open until next spring, construction of the pedways at both stations is complete and both pedways are offering public service this fall. The Century Park pedway should be open by the end of November.
The pedways at each location provide a safe crossing of 111th Street. Pedestrians can use the pedways to connect to LRT and bus stations at Southgate and Century Park, as well as the adjacent neighbourhoods of Malmo Plains and Blue Quill, and nearby shopping locations such as Southgate Centre Mall.
The pedways are sheltered from the elements and fully accessible to all citizens by stairway, escalator and elevator. However, pedway users will not have access to the Southgate LRT station or platform until Southgate Station opens next April. Security cameras provide 24-hour surveillance of the pedway to maximize public safety.
Southgate LRT Station and Century Park LRT Station will open to public service in April 2010, along with 5.5 kilometres of new track connecting the new stations to South Campus Station. The April grand opening will mark the completion of the South LRT extension.
