October 28, 2009

Edmonton’s City Council has hired Simon Farbrother as Edmonton’s new City Manager, effective January 18, 2010. Farbrother, who is currently the Chief Administrative Officer of the City of Waterloo, will replace current City Manager Al Maurer, who is retiring in February, 2010.

“On behalf of all of City Council, I am pleased to officially announce that Mr. Farbrother has been selected to this important role,” said Edmonton Mayor Stephen Mandel. “Simon has a proven track record in creative partnerships and innovative problem solving. What impressed Council was his approach to strategic thinking, collaboration and capacity building. He brings tested skills and a fresh perspective to an already strong team at the City of Edmonton.”

“Mr. Farbrother will build on the strong foundation established by the current administrative team under Al Maurer,” added Mandel. “He will work to implement Council’s City Vision, supported by its Strategic Plan, and we believe will bring additional strategic focus and administrative excellence to ensure strategy is well aligned with operations.”

Farbrother is familiar with Alberta. Although he earned his Undergraduate Degree in Economics and Geography from Portsmouth University in England, his Masters Degree in Geography was from the University of Alberta. He began his municipal career locally in 1989 as a planner with the City of Leduc. From there he advanced to increasingly senior positions. In 1997 he left Leduc to become the City Manager of Spruce Grove and, in 2005, became the Chief Administrative Officer for the City of Waterloo.

A Past President of the Canadian Association of Municipal Administrators (CAMA) Farbrother is currently International Vice President of the International City-County Managers Association (ICMA) 2007 – 2010.

Farbrother will be joined in Edmonton by his wife Marjorie and children Maggie, Liam and Matthew. He looks forward to joining a local soccer team and becoming an active member of the Edmonton community.

Mandel also offered praise for the leadership of outgoing City Manager, Al Maurer. “Edmonton has grown and significantly advanced under Al’s guidance,” said Mandel. “The City of Edmonton and the citizens of Edmonton are beneficiaries of Al’s efforts and results. He has left a very proud legacy upon which we can build.”
