Signals Testing Disrupts Traffic and LRT Service November 6-9, 2009
November 04, 2009
Testing of new traffic gates and signal lights/bells on the South LRT extension will disrupt automobile traffic and LRT service from Friday November 6 to Monday November 9.
Intersections along 111th Street from 49th Avenue at Southgate Centre Mall to 60th Avenue near South Campus Station will be periodically closed to motorists, cyclists and pedestrians as traffic gates are lowered and signal lights/bells are activated according to the following schedule:
- From 7pm November 6 until 5am November 7
- From 7pm November 7 until 5am November 8
- From 7pm November 8 until 5am November 9
Periodic closures will last approximately 90 seconds, every five to 10 minutes. Affected intersections include 49 Ave., 51 Ave., 54 Ave., 57 Ave. and 60 Ave.
There will be no LRT service south of Health Sciences Station from 6:50pm until end of service daily on Friday Nov. 6, Saturday Nov. 7 and Sunday Nov. 8.
Replacement shuttle bus service will operate on the following frequencies between University and South Campus stations while the LRT is shut down:
- 5 minute frequency on Friday from 6:50pm to 11pm and on Saturday from 6:50pm to 10pm.
- 7- 8 minute frequency on Friday after 11pm, Saturday after 10pm and on Sunday from 6:50pm to end of service.
Regular LRT service operates from Clareview Station to Health Sciences Station during the signal testing.
The testing is designed to simulate train movement without trains actually being on the tracks. To avoid confusion motorists, cyclists and pedestrians should pay close attention to gates and traffic signals at all times. Similar testing will be done on the remainder of the track to Century Park Station in 4-6 weeks time.
The South LRT extension to Southgate and Century Park is scheduled to open in April 2010.
