Edmonton’s Top History Makers and Markers Receive Awards

Edmonton’s rich and vibrant history was recognized at the Edmonton Historical Board’s 35th Annual Plaques and Awards Presentation.
Citizens, communities, and buildings received awards for protecting and preserving the city’s history.
“We commend the contributions of these award recipients in protecting and preserving the history of Edmonton,” said Lee Smith, Chair of the Edmonton Historical Board. “Their legacies will enhance the appreciation of our city’s heritage among current and future generations.”
2009 Historical Recognition Award
Five recipients earned the 2009 Historical Recognition Award for contributing to Edmonton’s development or preserving its history:
- Mr. Alan Vanterpool, author of four railway history books and instrumental contributor to Edmonton’s historical community;
- The Art Gallery of Alberta, creator of the exhibit, Capital Modern: Edmonton Architecture and Urban Design, 1940–1960;
- The Jewish Archives and Historical Society of Edmonton and Northern Alberta, producers of the video documentaries, From Pedlars to Patriarchs: A Legacy Remembered and Bittersweet Memories: The War Years;
- The University of Alberta Library, creators of Peel’s Prairie Provinces website;
- Mr. Vern Wishart, author of What Lies Behind the Picture? A Personal Journey into Cree Ancestry.
2009 Historical Plaque Award
The 2009 Historical Plaque Award was presented to seven historically significant sites and buildings in Edmonton:
- Chandler Barn (10828–125 Street);
- Dean-Kuperus Residence (11445–64 Street);
- Highlands Community;
- Margaret Marshall Residence (11119–62 Street);
- Strathcona Community;
- Wallbridge Residence (12606–104 Avenue); and
- Westmount Community.
“The tireless work and fortitude of our early pioneers has been matched by the 2009 award winners,” said Rob Smyth, Branch Manager, Community and Facility Services with the City of Edmonton. “Each recipient, through their diverse historical contributions, has taken on an important responsibility and challenge to illuminate our city’s history.”
Recipients of the Historical Recognition Award will be commemorated in the Historical Hall of Fame at the City Archives. Interpretive plaques will be installed in the buildings and communities that received the Historical Plaque Award.
The Edmonton Historical Board was established in 1938 to preserve and protect historical properties, resources, communities and documentary heritage in Edmonton.
Over 270 individuals and groups have received the Historical Recognition Award since it was first awarded in 1974. Almost 200 sites have received the Historical Plaque Award since it began in 1975.
