City’s Best Urban Designs to be Judged by Renowned Architects, Planners and Artists
July 28, 2009
Internationally-renowned architect Douglas Cardinal headlines the jury for the 2009 Edmonton Urban Design Awards.
Mr. Cardinal is a recipient of the Order of Canada and is credited for creating an indigenous Canadian style of architecture. In addition to being known for his design of the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau, Quebec, Mr. Cardinal designed Edmonton’s Space and Sciences Centre (now known as the Telus World of Science), St. Albert Place and a few other Alberta landmarks.
This is the City’s third biennial urban design awards, held since 2005. The awards are conducted in partnership with the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) Alberta Chapter.
Joining Mr. Cardinal as jurors are Brent Toderian, the City of Vancouver’s Director of Planning; Tim Jones, President and CEO of Artscape in Toronto; Michael Hough, founder of the School of Landscape Architecture at the University of Toronto; and Dan Hanganu, an architect from Montreal, whose work has been exhibited and published around the world.
“The City of Edmonton is honoured to have these highly regarded professionals review and comment on the urban, architectural and landscape design projects and plans in our city,” says Gary Klassen, General Manager of Edmonton’s Planning and Development department. “We are committed to improving the city’s urban architecture,” adds Klassen, “and the 2009 Edmonton Urban Design Awards will recognize those who are contributing to transforming Edmonton’s urban form.”
“We’re excited about the opportunity to share the work of Alberta designers, developers, architects, planners and artists with this select jury,” says Peter Osbourne of the Royal Architectural Institute Canada - Alberta Chapter. “These awards will help bring awareness to the importance of excellence in urban design.”
Awards will be given in six categories including urban design plans (implemented and unimplemented), building architecture, civic spaces, small scale urban fragments, and community improvement projects. The deadline for submissions is October 8, 2009; the winning entries will be unveiled at the awards gala in November 2009.
