City Targets Abandoned Vehicles Before Winter Sets In
October 27, 2009
Illegally parked vehicles will be ticketed and towed.
Parking enforcement officers are on the hunt for vehicles abandoned on City streets in an effort to remove them before winter sets in and snow banks make removal difficult.
Under the City’s Traffic Bylaw, vehicles can only be parked on a public roadway for 72 consecutive hours before they are considered abandoned. Vehicles that are not used regularly must be parked legally on private property or they will be ticketed and towed.
Abandoned vehicles take up short-term parking spots that should be available for public use. Also, when the City clears snow in the winter, plows have to leave snow in front of and behind abandoned vehicles, reducing public parking even further.
“Public streets belong to everyone and we want to make sure that street parking is reasonably available, not filled up with cars that are never used,” says Erin Blaine, Parking Enforcement Coordinator with the Community Standards Branch. “Parking vehicles you rarely use in your driveway or garage makes it easier for you, your neighbours and visitors to find short-term parking when they need it.”
In addition to the 72 hour limit, Edmonton’s bylaws require that all recreational vehicles be parked in backyards or storage facilities after October 31. RVs parked in backyards can not hang over back lanes or neighbouring properties.
To report an illegally parked or abandoned vehicle, please call the Edmonton Police Service non-emergency line at 780-423-4567 and a parking enforcement officer will respond.
