The City of Edmonton’s LRT Network Plan has received a ‘Highly Commended’ honour at the Light Rail Awards in London, England.

Edmonton was nominated in the ‘Worldwide Project of the Year’ category in recognition of its overall, long-term LRT Network Plan (city scale, urban style), which was directly linked to the broader City Vision of transit-oriented development, compact urban form and a shift in transportation modes. The commendation was announced at a black-tie dinner in London on October 7, 2009. The judges comprised senior representatives of the Light Rail Transit Association.

“LRT expansion and substantial investment in public transit infrastructure will help make Edmonton a world-class city,”said Rhonda Toohey, General Supervisor, Transportation Planning. “The LRT Network Plan lays the foundation for more sustainable transportation choices through a state-of-the-art light rail transit system. This international recognition confirms that Edmonton is on the right track.”

Other highly commended entrants were Phoenix, Arizona’s LRT system and Portland Ironworks (streetcar manufacturer). The winner of the ‘Worldwide Project’ category was the Gold Coast Australia Transit Project. The December edition of Tramways & Urban Transit magazine will feature the commendations and winners in all categories.

Edmonton’s new LRT Network Plan, developed with consultants Steer Davies Gleave and approved by City Council in June 2009, sets-out recommendations regarding the future size, scale and scope of its LRT system. The Plan defines the type of LRT system that best meets Edmonton’s long-term objectives, including the optimal number of LRT lines, their logical destinations, as well as a review of system styles and related LRT technologies. It also provides an overall framework for individual LRT corridor studies currently underway or being planned.
