Front Room Forums add to consultation on people services

The City of Edmonton wants you to invite friends, neighbours or members of your service organization to your home, a coffee shop or any comfortable gathering place and talk about how people services can help make Edmonton one of Canada’s most livable cities.

It’s called a Front Room Forum. The goal is to get people who are more comfortable chatting about issues in a casual environment to add their views to the current public consultation about Edmonton’s people services.

“People services affect all of us. We’re creating Edmonton’s first long-range people plan and we want all Edmontonians to have a chance to share their views,” says Marilyn Hussey, Project Coordinator, Community Services. “These will be more casual, self-directed discussions. And because we know conversation is always better with food, we’ll provide the first 100 people to host a Front Room Forum with a large pizza.”

Front Room Forum hosts will set a date for their event, register their forum with the City, get a coupon for a pizza sent to them in the mail and then use the Front Room Forum Discussion Guide for their conversation. They will send the key points of their conversation back to the city by November 30.

“Those points will be used to create The Way We Live: Edmonton's People Plan which will set direction, establish priorities and guide decisions about the people services that contribute to the health, safety and well-being of Edmontonians,” says Hussey. “People services include everything from police and fire services to snow removal, public parks and open spaces and arts and cultural events.”

Edmontonians can also go to www.edmonton.ca/TheWayWeLive and take part in surveys and discussion forums.  It is anticipated a draft of The Way We Live: Edmonton's People Plan will be available for public review and input next year.
