Roads Renewed in over 16 Edmonton Communities in 2009

October 19, 2009

Edmontonians will benefit from better road conditions, revitalized neighbourhoods and key roadways infrastructure put into place for Edmonton’s busiest construction season.

“The City of Edmonton is committed to ensuring that our neighbourhoods remain great places to live, work and play,” says George Teply, Director of Neighbourhood Renewal. “By investing in our communities, we make our city safer, easier to navigate, and attractive to both residents and businesses.”

A primary focus of this season’s construction was on improving infrastructure in Edmonton’s neighbourhoods. The communities that benefited from enhancements this year include:

  • Preventative maintenance – Roads were resealed to extend their lifespan in Glengarry, Elmwood, Brookside, Kildare, Quesnell Heights, Northmount, Kenilworth, Lynnwood, and Forest Heights.
  • Overlay – Roads were repaved and sidewalks were treated to eliminate trip hazards in Ogilvie Ridge, Sakaw, Delwood, and McLeod.
  • Reconstruction – Roads were repaved, and sidewalks and streetlights were replaced in Parkdale, Meadowlark and Lendrum.

The complete cost for neighbourhood renewal will be funded through the combination of property taxes, provincial funding and cost sharing with property owners.

Other project milestones reached this past construction season include the opening of the first bridge through the 23 Ave./Gateway Blvd. interchange, allowing traffic to flow freely beneath 23 Ave. and over top of the railway crossing. Construction on the Quesnell Bridge continues, with girders for deck widening currently in process. Work on key arterial routes was completed throughout Edmonton, with additional locations added in the summer due to lower construction costs.

“The 2010 Roadways Construction Program will be similar to the 2009 Program,” says Barry Belcourt, Manager of Roadways Construction. “A strong focus will continue on neighbourhood renewal and arterial road rehabilitation projects.”
