FCM’s Green Municipal Fund Supports the City of Edmonton in Sustainable Fleet Management Plan Development

October 15, 2009

FCM President Basil Stewart, mayor of Summerside, P.E.I., and Peter Goldring, MP for Edmonton East, on behalf of the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Natural Resources, announced today a Green Municipal Fund (GMF) grant for the City of Edmonton. Edmonton is using $96,250 grant to develop a Sustainable Fleet Management Plan.

“FCM’s Green Municipal Fund offers a range of resources and services that specifically address the sustainable community development needs of municipal governments,” said FCM President Basil Stewart, mayor of Summerside, P.E.I. “The financing and knowledge provided by the Fund supports the development of communities that are more environmentally, socially and economically sustainable.”

“Our government is assisting municipalities across the country in achieving their goal of a cleaner and healthier environment for Canadians through the Green Municipal Fund,” said Mr. Goldring." Today’s announcement of a $96,250 grant to develop a Sustainable Fleet Management Plan is another example of how the Government is working in partnership with FCM to help the citizens of Edmonton build a greener future.”

In keeping with the City of Edmonton’s commitment to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and manage city operations in a sustainable manner, the Fleet Services Branch is developing the City’s Sustainable Fleet Management Plan (SFMP). Developing the SFMP involves establishing baseline municipal fleet characteristics; reviewing vehicle purchasing, maintenance and disposal policies; investigating alternative fuel technology; and, assessing vehicle types and opportunities for right-sizing of the fleet. It is expected that implementing the SFMP will reduce the roughly 80,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases the municipal fleet produces annually to an estimated 23,000 tonnes. Additional environmental benefits as a result of the plan include improved local air quality and hazardous waste reductions.

“The Green Municipal Fund is valuable to the City of Edmonton as we advance our goal of a more sustainable community,” said Edmonton Mayor, Stephen Mandel. “By developing the Sustainable Fleet Management Plan, our City can identify new opportunities to lower our operational costs, decrease greenhouse gas emissions and ultimately, do better at protecting our environment.”

The Green Municipal Fund is an endowment financed by the Government of Canada and managed by the Federation of Can adian Municipalities. The Fund supports partnerships and leveraging of both public and private sector funding to reach higher standards of air, water and soil quality, and climate protection.

FCM has been the national voice of municipal governments since 1901. It fosters sustainable communities enjoying a high quality of life by promoting strong, effective, and accountable municipal government.
