Crews Install the Last Track on South LRT Extension

SLRT Last Track

September 22, 2009

City contractors are installing the last segment of track in the South LRT extension today at 57th Avenue and 111th Street. The 7.8-kilometre extension now connects Health Sciences LRT Station on the University of Alberta campus to the new Century Park Station at 23rd Avenue.

“The installation of the last track is a significant milestone in this massive public infrastructure project,” says LRT Design & Construction Branch Manager Wayne Mandryk. “We now have 20 kilometres of rail connecting Clareview Station in Edmonton’s northeast to Century Park in the southwest, running through the heart of our city.”

Although the last track is being set today, LRT construction continues as city engineers and contractors work to finalize electrical systems, signalization and landscape features of the South LRT extension.

“The 2009 construction season has been exceptionally busy for the City of Edmonton’s LRT Design & Construction team,” adds Mandryk. “Contractors completed all roadwork on 111th St., and EPCOR made great progress installing the overhead catenary electrical system.

“We are grateful for the patience Edmontonians have exhibited as we strive to complete this project while minimizing impacts to local residents and traffic as much as possible,” says Mandryk.

Work on the South LRT extension will continue through the fall, to prepare the route for rigorous safety testing scheduled to begin in February 2010. The new tracks and both new LRT stations at Southgate and Century Park are on schedule to be ready for public service starting in April 2010.
