Edmonton’s International Conference on Urban Traffic Safety
Dates: March 16 – 18, 2009
(Free Public Forum: March 17th at 6 pm)
Location: Sutton Place Hotel, 10235-101 Street
“Edmonton is demonstrating that it is taking an evidence based-approach through education and research to improve road safety in our City,” says Gerry Shimko, OTS Executive Director.
With its impressive line-up of cutting-edge traffic experts, the conference is intended to challenge old notions about traffic safety and generate innovative ideas on how to improve the safety of Edmonton’s roads. Sessions and workshops will focus on the four E’s of traffic safety: engineering, education, enforcement and evaluation.
“Traffic safety isn’t just about the vehicles on the road,” says Shimko. “Planners, traffic officers, drivers and pedestrians; we all play a role.”
In conjunction with the conference, the EPC is holding a public forum on the evening of March 17th at the Sutton Place Hotel. The keynote speaker will discuss the power of community involvement and a panel will present a number of community based traffic safety initiatives already working in Edmonton.
“We want communities to feel empowered to take action on traffic safety issues in their neighborhoods, “says Brian Gibson, chair of the Edmonton Police Commission “The forum allows communities to share their challenges, and successes.”
