Quesnell Traffic Plan Offers Motorists Real-time Information
February 19, 2009
Construction that will make the Quesnell Bridge safer, faster and extend its life by 50 years is scheduled to resume early this March. The City of Edmonton’s traffic management plan will provide motorists with real-time traffic and construction information, giving them an opportunity to find alternate routes before reaching the construction site.
“As part of the traffic plan, Edmonton’s Transportation Management Centre now has access to 34 traffic cameras and a network of 64 Digital Messaging Signs (DMS),” explains Byron Nicholson, Director of Roadways Construction. “The Centre will monitor traffic, construction activities, and any collisions near the construction site. The centre can then update real-time traffic information onto the DMS signs.
The DMS network spans from Whitemud Drive on 50 St. all the way to 170 St. The DMS and the online traffic cameras will give motorists excellent information for planning their travel routes ahead of time.”
“Fox Drive westbound is being closed to ensure the best transit service possible,” says Nicholson. “Starting March 1, Fox Drive westbound from Belgravia to Whitemud Drive will be closed to all traffic except for Edmonton Transit.”
The Fox Drive westbound is scheduled to reopen to all traffic in December 2009 once the east side of the Quesnell Bridge has been widened and rehabilitated.
To maximize traffic flow during construction, five lanes will be maintained across the Quesnell Bridge. In order to maintain five lanes of traffic, the sidewalk across the Quesnell Bridge will be closed to pedestrians and cyclists starting Monday, February 23 at 7 a.m.
“A free shuttle service will be available to help cyclists and pedestrians safely cross the Quesnell Bridge,” says Nicholson. “The shuttle stops in Laurier Heights at 142 A St. and Laurier Drive and Fort Edmonton Park.”
The enforced speed limit through the construction site is 60 km/h unless otherwise posted. The City of Edmonton would like to thank motorists and pedestrians for their patience during construction. People are encouraged to pre-plan their route and give themselves extra time to get to their destination.
An electronic quarterly newsletter is now available for people to receive regular Quesnell Bridge construction updates. To subscribe, forward your e-mail address and name to quesnell@edmonton.ca
