Ward System

On July 22, 2009 City Council adopted an electoral system that divides Photo of downtown EdmontonEdmonton into 12 wards, each represented by a single City Councillor. This system will come into effect with the next municipal election on Monday, October 18, 2010.

Until then, the current system of six wards, each represented by two Councillors, will remain in place.

Current Bylaw 11388 and map of the current six wards are still in place until Sunday, October 17, 2010.

In each system, the Mayor is elected by a city-wide vote. Also in each system, citizens are free to contact any Councillor in the city with questions or concerns.

Council made the change following consultation with citizens. See the Ward System Consultation and Proposed Bylaw 15142 Council report documents on the right for details.

Edmontonians said the main reasons for changing to a 12-ward, single-Councillor system are:

  • Increased accountability
  • Better representation of local needs
  • Less duplication of effort
  • Lower costs, and therefore more accessibility for candidates running for office

Most North American cities have adopted single Councillor per ward system.
