Waste Management Services has consistently placed a high priority on protecting the environment.
On August 30, 2006, Waste Management Services received ISO 14001:2004 Certification for its Environmental Management System (EMS).
What is Enviso - ISO 14001?
Enviso is the name of the City of Edmonton's environmental management system. It is based on the international standard ISO 14001 and provides us with a systematic method of managing and improving our environmental performance.
The ISO 14001 framework helps organizations comply with environmental legislation, prevent pollution and continually improve environmental performance. Achieving and maintaining ISO 14001 certification demonstrates that we are doing everything in our power to effectively manage our environmental responsibilities.
Enviso provides Waste Management Services with a tool to systematically manage the environmental impacts of our operations. Enviso helps our branch to:
- recognize and control our environmental risks;
- conserve materials, energy and other resources even more; and
- foster a greater awareness of environmental issues among employees and stakeholders.
Waste Management Services is committed to conducting our activities in an efficient, environmentally sound, socially acceptable and fiscally responsible manner. To find out more about our commitment, please refer to our Environmental Policy.
The system covers Waste Management Services' activities at the City of Edmonton, including Collection Services, Engineering Processing & Disposal, Community Relations and Business Planning & Central Operations.
Although Waste Management Services has always placed a high priority on protecting the environment, an EMS formalizes the way in which we manage our environmental activities. ISO 14001 certification requires regular internal and external audits of our EMS. This helps ensure the system remains viable and current.
