- 1. Do I have to make an appointment or call ahead?
You can, but it is not necessary.
- 2. May I get copies of images or documents?
Usually we can arrange for copies to be made; however, we may have restrictions on the reproduction of images or on photocopying documents.
The researcher assumes all responsibility under the terms of the Canadian Copyright Act for use of material copied and images purchased from the City of Edmonton Archives. Use of the reproduction for a purpose other than for research or private study may require the authorization of the copyright owner.
- 3. Are there any fees involved?
We charge fees for the reproduction of documents and images in our collection. For researchers not based in Edmonton you can request to pay flat research fee for specific services from the reference archivist. Please refer to our Research Fees or contact our reference archivist (780-496-8711).
Research Fees
Due to the increasing number of requests for information from researchers not based in Edmonton, the following flat fees are now in effect:
- Newspaper obituary search (exact date of death or burial must be provided) - $30*
- Biographical or general information (from Archives clipping files) - $30* (maximum 20 pages) + $0.50 per page for every additional page after the first 20
*Includes North American postage.
Note: There is only a charge if information is available. That is, if there is no obituary or clipping file, there is no charge.
Material will only be copied and mailed out upon receipt of payment. If the request is from the United States, the charge is in US dollars. Fees are subject to change without notice.
- 4. Can I get this black and white photograph from your collection in colour?
If the original print was a colour image, you may be able to receive a colour reproduction; however, most of our images are black and white in their original format.
- 5. I am preparing a Phase 1 Environmental Site Assessment. Can you send me digital aerial photographs of a particular site?
We can provide laser copies of the aerial photographs we have in our holdings to researchers who come in and identify which images they require.
Digital images of more recent aerial photographs are available through Maps and Publications at the City of Edmonton Planning and Development Department (780-496-6160), or through the Alberta Government's Air Photo Distribution office (780-427-3520).
