The City is bringing the vision of the City’s Transportation Master Plan, The Way We Move to life in three key focus areas:
Planning for the Future
As the City grows, new infrastructure is needed to create a safe, vibrant and environmentally sustainable city that moves it’s citizens effectively and efficiently, fulfilling The Way We Move’s Vision.
New infrastructure projects and initiatives that move the city towards achieving The Way We Move’s goals include initiatives such as Complete Streets, the design and construction of LRT, design and construction of pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, arterial roadway expansion, and strategic planning for Yellowhead Trail.
Asset Management and Maintenance
The City has an extensive inventory of existing transportation infrastructure—including roads, bridges, traffic and street lights, sidewalks, and transit and LRT facilities. These assets deteriorate and require consistent rehabilitation or replacement. With limited budgets and increasing demands on the transportation network, the City is challenged with managing its assets in a way that minimizes total life cycle costs and maintains expected levels of service and safety. The City has a number of programs that focus on the renewal of our existing transportation system: neighbourhood renewal, roadway preventive maintenance and renewal, and transit fleet and facilities renewal.
Building a 21st century city—shaping an Edmonton that will meet the needs of our diverse and growing population—is not just about building new infrastructure. In many cases it is important to maintain, monitor and improve upon services that already exist today. Continued success in these areas is foundational to the successful implementation of The Way We Move. Examples of foundational services include the operation of bus and LRT transit, snow and ice control, facility planning and conceptual design, and engineering and project management services for roads. Examples of foundational service initiatives include a comprehensive transit review and student outreach programs to support The Way We Move.
