June 2018

The Complete Streets Design and Construction Standards are released.

Beginning in 2016, the City undertook a substantial and holistic update to the former roadway design standards. In addition to aligning with emerging best practice and new national design guidance, the update combined the former Complete Streets Guidelines and Roadway Design Standards into a single design reference document now called the Complete Streets Design and Construction Standards. This new standards document guides the design of streets throughout Edmonton and embraces context-sensitive street design.

December 2015

The Main Street Guidelines are published and provide guidance to the design of Main Streets as they are reconstructed.

October 2015

The Complete Streets policy is amended to designate the City’s “Main Streets”.  Main Streets are not only transportation links, they are streets that will be designed to act as strong community places and often have a tie to business and community revitalization. Main Streets are designed to an enhanced standard.

May 2013

The Complete Streets Policy was approved by City Council on May 22, 2013

The policy and accompanying guidelines encourage a holistic approach to roadway design in order to develop a network of roadways that are safe, attractive, comfortable and welcoming to all users. Designing New Neighbourhoods, Edmonton’s Future Residential Communities Policy was approved at the same time. The guidelines for this policy will influence the physical structure and layout of our new neighbourhoods.

Public Engagement

In 2012 and 2013 the public was engaged through online discussions which led into the creation of the Complete Streets Principles and the Complete Streets Guidelines. In February 2013, the project team held three public meetings to give Edmontonians an opportunity to provide input on the Draft Complete Streets Guidelines. The meetings were held in collaboration with another City of Edmonton project: Designing New Neighbourhoods.
