Ward 10-Don Iveson

Don Iveson Biography
Don was re-elected in 2010 to represent the new Ward 10, an area around the University of Alberta's South Campus, Southgate and Century Park. He was first elected to represent the former Ward 5 in 2007.
Don is building a more livable city through advocating for the following: improved urban design, safer and budget-conscious transportation choices, and increased investment in crumbling neighbourhood infrastructure. Don also actively works on making central living more attractive and affordable to families with children.
He chairs both Council's Utility Committee and the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
Don's blog chronicles important decisions and issues coming before City Council and you can also keep tabs on him via Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/doniveson.
Mayor Mandel asked Don to take a leading role in environmental initiatives in the fall of 2007. Don is currently working with City staff on the implementation of the recently approved environmental strategic plan, The Way We Green.
Don serves as Council's liaison on the City of Edmonton Youth Council and Next Gen. He also founded and chairs the Edmonton City of Learners initiative.
He also serves as Council's representative on the Edmonton Public Library Board. Don is actively engaged in the region as Chair of the Regional Transit Committee of the Capital Region Board and member of the Advocacy Committee.
Prior to running for City Council, he was a government relations professional with the University of Alberta's Students' Union. He led negotiations with the City of Edmonton to implement a universal bus pass for students.
In 2001, Don received a Bachelor of Arts with Distinction in Political Science from the University of Alberta. During his studies, he served as managing editor of the Gateway, the University of Alberta's official student newspaper. He spent the last year of his degree on exchange at the University of Toronto and then served as president of Canadian University Press (CUP), a national news, advocacy and professional development organization comprised of more than 70 campus newspapers. Don stays connected to the University of Alberta by volunteering for the Gateway Alumni Association.
Don was an active member of his community prior to the election. While living downtown from 2003 to 2005, he served as director on the Fifth Street Lofts Condominium Association, worked with the coalition opposing the Baccarat Casino expansion and advocated for better urban design in the warehouse district. He served as vice-president of the Malmo Plains Community League until the fall of 2007. He has also volunteered for Public Interest Alberta, Canada25, the Alberta Debate and Speech Association, and the Alberta Sailing Association.
Don and his wife Sarah Chan have a son named Dexter and a puppy named Dougal.
