Ron Hayter Biography

Ron Hayter is the longest serving Councillor in Edmonton's history.

Prior to joining City Council in 1971, Councillor Hayter worked as a reporter and editor with the Edmonton Journal and The Edmontonian Magazine, and as a correspondent for Time Magazine. In 1965, he opened a small business specializing in the organization of consumer trade shows.

After stepping down from Council in 1995 to serve on the National Parole Board, Councillor Hayter returned to the political arena in the 2001 civic election.

Throughout his career, Councillor Hayter has been involved in many of Edmonton's important moments.  He served as Founding Director in the 1978 Commonwealth Games and has acted in leadership roles at other major events in the city. He has been inducted into the Sports Halls of Fame municipally, provincially, and federally. He enjoys life membership in some of the country's major sports, municipal, community, and volunteer organizations.

Councillor Hayter continues to be active on various Council and community committees, and enjoys fishing, harness racing and travelling. He is a widower with three children and two grandchildren.

Inducted into the Hall of Fame in his hometown of Hudson Bay, SK in 2005. Inducted into the Hudson Bay Composite High School Sports Wall of Fame, 2004.   As head of the Mayor's Aboriginal Initiative, he spearheaded development and approval of the City of Edmonton's Declaration on Strengthening Relationships between the City of Edmonton and Urban Aboriginal People in 2005.   The first of its kind approved by a city council in Canada, (see declaration) was described as a "Remarkable Document" by the Edmonton Journal.
