Drainage Education
Drainage Services offers public education programs for school children and for adults.
The elementary school program is entitled Treat it Right!® The goal of this program is to teach children how their actions can have a negative impact on the storm water and wastewater systems and ultimately on the environment. Children learn about what should and shouldn’t be dumped into the storm water and wastewater systems through a series of lessons which include readings, activities, games, and take home activities.
The junior high school program is intended for Grade 8 and is also entitled Treat it Right!® This program also focuses on behaviour change and links to the Alberta Education Grade 8 science program of studies.
The adult education program focuses on the issue of pouring fats, oils, and grease (FOG) into the sanitary sewage system. Store it, Don’t Pour it! encourages Edmontonians to dispose of FOG by putting it into a tin and then, once the tin is full, putting it in the garbage. This simple step can save residents time and money.
Another program for Edmontonians relates to flood prevention. Flood Prevention Program teaches residents about what they can do to prevent flooding on their property. Other workshops are available.
School Programs:
Treat it Right!® school programs include:
- Grade 4 – Treat it Right!® Wastewater (both English and French versions)
- Grade 5 – Treat it Right!® Storm Water (both English and French versions)
- Grade 8 - Treat it Right!® Wastewater (English version only)
Developed as three teachers’ guides, these programs link to the Alberta Education program of studies and focus on science. The programs integrate language arts, social studies, and mathematics as appropriate to the grade level and the content. A colourful flow chart of the system accompanies each guide. This flow chart is also included in black and white at the back of each teacher’s guide.
Treat it Right!® Wastewater Puppet Show for Grade 4 students.
Treat it Right!® Storm Water - Constructed Wetland Field Trip for Grade 5 students.
Treat it Right!® is a registered trademark of the City of Edmonton.
Flood Prevention Workshops:
In 2005 and 2006, free educational workshops on Backwater Valves, and Sump Pumps were held. They were presented by a plumbing instructor from NAIT.
These workshops were developed to help homeowners make informed choices about flood prevention on their own property.
- Backwater Valve Workshop provides information of the function and how it works to prevent water backing up from sewer pipes.
- Sump Pump Workshop explains how it removes water to a safer location away from house foundation.
