Branch Mandate

Community Strategies provides leadership and expertise to achieve departmental and branch outcomes through corporate and departmental alignment, research, planning and policy development, managing department processes, and measurement and evaluation.

Branch Services

Aboriginal and Race Relations
The Aboriginal Relations Office supports relationship building between the Aboriginal community and City business units, to improve the delivery of City services to Canada's second largest Aboriginal community. The Office supports implementation of City Council's Indigenous Peoples Strategy Initiative, its Aboriginal Declaration and the Edmonton Urban Aboriginal Accord. Race Relations coordinates and supports implementation of the multi-partner Racism Free Edmonton Action Plan. It also supports City Council 's Multiculturalism Initiative and implements actions aimed at achieving full inclusion of racialized people - and promoting community harmony - in an increasingly diverse Edmonton.

Civic Events Office
The Civic Events Office coordinates City services for festivals and events, making it easier and less time-consuming for organizers to get the permits and access to the services they might need. From major events like the Edmonton Indy to marathons, fundraisers and community celebrations showcasing our city’s dynamic arts and cultural scene, the Civic Events Office helps to ensure these events run safely and smoothly from start to finish. In addition, the Civic Events Office provides sponsorships to organizations that host events in Edmonton that promote and enhance our city’s reputation provincially, nationally and internationally.

Communities of Interest
Communities of Interest manages such programs as Active Edmonton, NextGen, Seniors, Salute to Excellence, Child Friendly Edmonton (Youth Council), corporate volunteer resources and multicultural programs. Communities of Interest also serves on the Advisory Board for Persons with Disabilities – Special Needs.

Performance Improvement
Performance Improvement establishes, implements, and monitors comprehensive performance measure reporting systems for all the branches across the department. Performance Improvement also facilitates qualitative learning and evaluation, and manages department-wide administrative processes including FOIP, records management, and department reception.

Policy and Research
Policy and Research undertakes policy and project management, social research and planning, and market research. Policy and Research meets this mandate through involvement in corporate processes and management of key strategic initiatives.

Strategic and Business Planning
Strategic and Business Planning facilitates long-range business and operational planning, and provides web content management and electronic communications expertise. Strategic and Business Planning also manages contracts and contract negotiations for the entire department.
