Vehicle for Hire Bylaw and Commission

Vehicle for Hire Bylaw #14700

The new Vehicle for Hire Bylaw which became effective as of April 1, 2008 replaced the following bylaws:  The Taxi Bylaw (#12020), the Accessible Taxi Bylaw (#13909) and the Limousine Bylaw (#10670). This bylaw gives the Vehicle for Hire (VFH) Commission the authority, from City Council, to create its' regulations.

Under the new bylaw, all of the licences that were previously issued under the old bylaws (vehicle, business & driver's) for taxis,  limousines and a new category called shuttle services are controlled and issued through this one bylaw.

Vehicle for Hire Commission Bylaw # 14400

As of April 1, 2008, the Vehicle for Hire Commision  (formerly the Edmonton Taxi Cab Commission) shall, subject to bylaws or any other applicable statute or regulation made pursuant to any such statute, have control of the licensing, operation, regulation and control of taxi  and accessible taxi drivers licences, taxi and accessible taxi plate licences, taxi brokers licences, limousine driver's licences, limousine vehicle licences, limousine service licences, shuttle driver's licences, shuttle vehicle licences and shuttle service (business) licences in Edmonton.

Urgent Information Regarding Safety Shields

The Commission Executive has extended the deadline for ordering new safety shields beyond November 30, 2008. A new deadline will be announced early in 2009. There may be some changes to safety shield specifications.

Meter Rate Increase

City Council approved a taxi meter fare increase on February 14, 2008 to be effective as of March 3, 2008. The new meter rates are as follows:

  • $3. 60 for the first 135 meters or portion thereof
  • $0. 20 each additional 135 meters or portion thereof

or

  • $0. 20 each 24 seconds while stopped
  • $30.00 each hour waiting time
  • $3. 60 for any call cancelled on arrival at the point ordered

The Edmonton Taxi Cab Commission has developed a new Vehicle for Hire bylaw # 14700 that has replaced the Taxi Bylaw, Accessible Taxi Bylaw, and Limousine Bylaw:

The Taxi Commission is pleased to advise that there are currently wheelchair accessible taxi vehicles operating in the City of Edmonton which are available through Co-op Taxi, Yellow Cab and Capital Taxi.
