Heating and Ventilation - Commercial

Contractors must be bonded and licensed to obtain permits with the City of Edmonton.

A Heating and Ventilation Permit is required by the Mechanical Bylaw 11004 when installing or altering heating and ventilation equipment, including:

  • Furnaces
  • Boilers
  • Heating exchanges
  • Make up air units
  • Kitchen exhaust systems
  • Hydronic (hot water) systems
  • Air conditioning units
  • Spray booth exhausts
  • Dust collecting systems
  • Ventilation systems

Fees

2012

New Construction

Any installation of a HVAC system or a new commercial building is $0.55/$1000 construction value, with a minimum of $148.
A safety code fee of 4% of the permit cost with a minimum of $4.50 - maximum of $560.

Altering or Replacing an Existing System

The Heating Permit fee is $154/unit or address.

A Safety code fee of 4% of the permit cost with a minimum of $4.50 - maximum of $560

Inspections

After the work is completed, an equipment inspection is required.

All concealed and enclosed equipment must be inspected and approved before being covered. For example concealed ducts and in-floor hydronics must be inspected before they are permanently enclosed.

If the uninspected work has been covered, the inspector has the authority to re-open the area.

A permit must be obtained prior to booking an inspection.

Additional Inspections

There is a fee of $216, effective January 1, 2012, for every inspection requested where any of the following items are found to be deficient:

  • No address on site, building, or suite as applicable.
  • Inspector unable to access the building.
  • Project not ready for inspection.
  • A previously identified deficiency has not been corrected.
