Gas - Commercial
A Gas Permit is required by the Mechanical Bylaw 11004 when installing or relocating any gas equipment, including:
- Propane installations
- Piping and gas lines
- Boilers (hydronic)
- Make up air units
- Fireplaces
- Furnaces (and roof top units)
- Gas pumps
- Kitchen equipment
- Meters

The safety codes fee is 4% of the permit cost, minimum $4.50 - maximum $560/permit.
Regulations
New Gas Lines
Before a gas meter can be installed the new gas line requires an approved inspection.
Primary Gas Lines
A primary gas line cannot be can not be located under an accessory building.
Shut Off Gas Line
Before the gas service is restored to an existing gas line that had been shut off for 6 or more months, a licensed and bonded contractor must do a pressure test on the line.
The contractor will then request an inspection from the City plumbing and gas inspector who must be approve the job.
The City plumbing and gas inspector will then advise ATCO of the inspection approval. At this stage, the customer is required to contact ATCO to send out a technician who will put the gas line into service.
Inspection
After the work is completed an inspection by the City is required.
All concealed equipment must be inspected and approved before covering.
If the work has not had an inspection but has been covered, the inspector has the authority to re-open the area for inspection.
Booking an Inspection
A permit must be obtained before booking an inspection.

Extra Inspections
There is a fee of $216, as of January 1, 2012, for every inspection requested where any of the following items are found to be deficient:
- No address on site, building, or suite as applicable.
- Inspector unable to access the building.
- Project not ready for inspection.
- A previously identified deficiency has not been corrected.
