Make a Better City Teacher's Resource

Make a Better City is a teaching resource for grade 6 Social Studies, Health & Life Skills, and Language Arts courses. It explores how we live together in an urban community like Edmonton, why we need rules and bylaws, and how people can make a difference in their community.

Through this curriculum, students learn about local government, explore neighbourhood issues, and learn the value of responsible citizenship.

Make a Better City also emphasizes the use of class projects to teach the concepts. Students can:

  • Explore their rights and responsibilities by analyzing local current events
  • Discuss local bylaws and think of ways they could be improved
  • Think of safer, healthier practices that would make their school or community better
  • Complete actual projects to improve the neighbourhood around their school such as litter pick-ups, being Snow Angels, or educating their fellow students about being a responsible pet owner

This curriculum is flexible so teachers can adapt the lessons to meet the needs and interests of their students. Please feel free to print these resources and handouts to use in your classroom, and phone or email us with any questions you may have about this City program.
