Bylaw Services
The Community Standards Branch is part of Planning and Development. We provide bylaw enforcement services to the citizens of Edmonton.
Community Standards Peace Officers, Municipal Enforcement Officers, and Animal Control Officers protect the health, safety and welfare of citizens by promoting compliance with our community standards and animal control bylaws.
Who Investigates and Enforces Bylaw Complaints?
There are 4 main groups of enforcement officers that work for the Community Standards Branch, organized in to 3 focus areas:
General Enforcement
Municipal Enforcement Officers generally investigate complaints from citizens relating to the Community Standards Bylaw or other non-urgent bylaw violations on private property.
Community Standards Peace Officers respond to "on-the-spot" bylaw concerns and generally deal with public property issues.
Animal Control Services
Animal Control Officers respond to animal-related complaints and enforce the Animal Licensing and Control Bylaw.
Parking Enforcement
Parking Enforcement Officers respond to parking violations and concerns.
Three Strike Policy
Wherever feasible, bylaw enforcement officers provide education and warnings before taking enforcement action. However, this practice does not apply to all bylaw situations. For example, this policy does not apply to parking enforcement.
Complaint Information
If a complaint is made, personal information may be collected under the authority of Section 33(c) of the provincial government's
Alberta Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, Section 642 of the Municipal Government Act and/or Section 59 of the Safety Codes Act.
