Animal Care & Control Centre

The City of Edmonton's new Animal Care and Control Centre.

The City of Edmonton’s new Animal Care and Control Centre (located at the corner of 137 Ave and 163 Street) will replace the current Animal Services Facility with a spacious, energy-efficient building designed to meet all modern animal care standards.

Construction of the centre started in May 2009 and the building is expected to be complete late 2010.

For the lastest update on construction, visit Construction Progress.

Improved Animal Care

The Animal Care and Control Centre will have more and better designed space to house the almost 8,000 lost pets found in Edmonton each year. The building’s design will reduce animal stress and make disease control easier and more effective.

The building will have 2,120 square metres (22,800 square feet) of space and will be able to hold up to 120 dogs and 150 cats. There will also be an area specially designed for the other pets we occasionally find, like reptiles and rabbits.

The existing Animal Services Facility was built in 1975 and is no longer adequate due to the growth our city has experienced over the last 35 years. The existing facility also does not meet modern animal care standards, creating unnecessary stress for the pets in our care.

Improved Service to Citizens

The Animal Care and Control Centre will have a larger public service area, including two rooms where staff can hold private meetings with pet owners when needed.

Animal Control Officers will be based at the centre and the Edmonton Humane Society is next door, providing a one-stop shop for adoption, licensing, stray animal care, and enforcement services.

Centre staff will also have a larger, brighter, and quieter workspace.

Environmentally Sustainable Design

The design for the Animal Care and Control Centre received a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification for its energy and heat efficiency, making it a leader in environmentally sustainable construction.

The building has several sustainable features:

  • It uses solar and geothermal energy for heating and cooling
  • It is energy and heat efficient
  • It uses natural lighting systems
  • It collects storm water for use
  • It uses green building materials

Cost of Construction

The Animal Care and Control Centre will cost approximately $13.2 million to complete and will serve Edmontonians for the next 25-30 years. Council approved the funding for the project in December 2008.

The City of Edmonton is contributing $10.4 million and federal and provincial governments are contributing a combined $2.8 million through the Canada-Alberta Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund.
