Queen Elizabeth Outdoor Swimming Pool Redevelopment
The new Queen Elizabeth Outdoor Swimming Pool, located in Kinsmen Park, will bring new leisure, recreation and sports opportunities to Edmonton’s beautiful river valley.
The new outdoor pool is integrated with the other attractions in Kinsmen Park such as the Kinsmen Sports Centre, Kinsmen Pitch and Putt, children’s playground, sports fields, picnic sites, river valley park trail system, and the John Walter Museum.
The new pool replaces the original pool built in 1922, which was closed in 2004 after a major crack developed in the pool basin. With the ongoing support of the Friends of the Queen Elizabeth Pool Society and the community, the City of Edmonton relocated the pool in nearby Kinsmen Park, and the project continued with an exciting and inclusive design. The new outdoor pool will open to the public in summer 2011.
The total cost for the pool and spray park is $6.5 million, with the City of Edmonton contributing $5.1 million. Through the efforts of the Friends of the Queen Elizabeth Pool Society, the Government of Canada is contributing $1 million through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada Program, and the Government of Alberta is contributing $320,000 through the lottery-funded Community Facility Enhancement Program. The Friends are also contributing an additional $80,000 through fundraising efforts and community support.
The Queen Elizabeth Outdoor Swimming Pool project aligns with the City of Edmonton Outdoor Aquatic Strategy, the Recreation Facility Master Plan, the Urban Parks Management Plan, as well as the City of Edmonton Strategic Plan.
The new Queen Elizabeth Pool is located in Kinsmen Park at 9100 Walterdale Hill.

Construction Update September 2009
Construction of the new Queen Elizabeth Outdoor Swimming Pool in Kinsmen Park has started, and the facility is expected to open to the public for summer 2011.
Construction includes:
- New Queen Elizabeth Outdoor Swimming Pool and amenities
- New children’s spray park
- New children’s playground
To facilitate construction and maintain public safety, northwest portions of the park and adjacent parking stalls will be fenced off and closed to the public. Please observe posted signage.
The Kinsmen Sports Centre, and most park spaces and trails will remain open to the public during the construction. Parking will continue to be available in Kinsmen’s main parking lot.
To minimize the impact on the neighbouring community and user groups, construction will take place 9am – 7pm, Monday – Friday, with no construction on weekends or statutory holidays. Construction will continue through the fall, cease for winter, and resume in spring 2010.
