Rundle Park - Disc Golf Course Upgrade Project

Project Plan 2009:

The approved project now to be implemented in 2009 is classified as a Conservation Project specifically intended to:

  1. Update aging disc golf infrastructure,
  2. Correct the erosion issues appearing on the present course,
  3. Ensure the course is safe as well as challenging for all participants and park users alike.

The planned upgrades for the Rundle Disc Golf Course will have a minimal financial and community impact.

As part of the overall conservation to the Rundle Disc Golf Course, it was approved to include the enhancement of the course to meet international Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) standards, improve the safety for park users, and minimize course erosion.

Disc Golf Upgrade Project Rationale:

  • The Rundle Disc Golf Course was originally installed as a 9 hole disc golf course in 1980.
  • In 2003, the Rundle Disc Golf Course was expanded by 6 additional holes to become a 15 hole course.
  • The existing Rundle Disc Golf Course is aging and requires conservation, rehabilitation and upgrading measures to its target’s, tee off areas and high foot traffic areas.
  • Each of the existing tee off areas, target areas and high foot traffic areas, on the course has experienced severe erosion over its lifetime.
  • Each of the existing disc golf targets need replacing due to their age and because of advancements in target technology and sport regulations in disc golf.

Disc Golf Project Opportunity Objectives:

  1. Minimize erosion in the park and towards the river valley edge.
  2. Minimize impacts to trail users within the park for safety reasons.
  3. Minimize impacts to residences and front yards across the street from Rundle Park.
  4. Increase the longevity of the Rundle Disc Golf Course.
  5. Increase the playability and challenge levels of the course.
  6. Update all disc golf targets to meet international Professional Disc Golf standards.
  7. Consider extending normal play to 18 holes to meet PDGA standards.

2009 Project Phasing:

18 holes are currently played during special events and tournaments. If a sufficient level of support is present for a standard 18-hole layout, then the following project phasing is proposed:

  • Install 18 concrete tee box areas (5' x 10' pad) to minimize erosion
  • Install 1 practice target green
  • Install 2 target options for each hole (1’x1’) cement base to hold basket/pole
  • Install 37 sleeves for Disc Targets
  • Install 18 Disc Targets
  • Realign entire course (relocate starting point of course)
  • Rehabilitate all tee off areas, target areas and other high foot traffic areas on course

Pending improvements based on project budget;

  • Pending - design, manufacture and install 10 "Disc Golf Awareness" signs and 4 pedestrian yield signs
  • Pending - design, manufacture and install 18 new hole signs
  • Pending - design, manufacture and install "Disc Golf Rules" sign
  • Pending - Relocate and reinstall Disc Golf message board
