Downtown

Downtown Edmonton sits on the north bank of the North Saskatchewan River, bordered on the west by the domed, granite and sandstone Legislative Building, and on the east by the castle-like Fairmont Hotel Macdonald. There are many places to shop and eat including a wide variety of shops and restaurants, and the City Centre Mall.
The area around Sir Winston Churchill Square is called the Arts District. The Winspear Centre for Music, the Citadel Theatre for Performing Arts, the Art Gallery of Alberta and the Stanley A. Milner Library are all world-class facilities you can find in this area.
Sir Winston Churchill Square, a park in the core of Edmonton's downtown, is a favourite hangout of the office crowd and weekend fun seekers. The square hosts many of the City's festivals, and is the "front yard" of the Edmonton's pyramid-topped City Hall.
Jasper Avenue is home to many of Edmonton's oldest heritage buildings and some of Edmonton's tallest office towers, including Canadian Western Bank Place and Scotia Place. It is also home to trendy restaurants and bars. Chinatown is just a few blocks from downtown. Enclosed pedestrian walkways called "pedways," both underground and overhead, connect most of the downtown buildings for easy pedestrian access in winter.
