Attractions & Recreation Volunteer Opportunities

Feature Volunteer Opportunities

Kids Den Assistant

Assist with the care and supervision of infants and children in the Kids Den at the Kinsmen Sports Centre.  

Requirements

  • Experience working with babies and/or children.
  • Babysitting courses and/or first aid courses an asset.
  • Ability to follow direction and be receptive to feedback.
  • Must be at least 12 years old.

Duties

  • Supervise children ensuring the overall safety of all children.
  • Interact with children.
  • Initiate games, activities, and crafts.
  • Change diapers when necessary.
  • Assist with feeding babies when necessary.
  • Communicate problems/issues as they arise.
  • All positions are in the morning (9am-noon).

SwimAbilities Volunteer

SwimAbilities is a program offered at the ACT Recreation Centre for children (ages 4-14 years) with limited mobility, physical impairments, or other disabilities.

Requirements

  • Must be comfortable in the water (able to swim in the deep end).
  • Must enjoy working with children, especially children with special needs.
  • Energetic, enthusiastic, and able to follow directions of the swim instructor.

Duties

  • Provide support and assistance to the swim instructor and participants.
  • Assist participants with use of equipment.
  • Equipment distribution and storage.
  • Provide encouragement to participants.
  • Assist with songs, games, and help participants practice skills in the water.

Special Needs Volunteer Assistants

Would you like to make a difference in the life of a person with a developmental disability?  Are you looking to establish a meaningful relationship and support a special needs volunteer in their volunteer role?

Volunteers are needed to mentor and support persons with special needs in their volunteer endeavors.  Apply to become a Special Needs Volunteer Assistant and receive high quality training and opportunities for development.   

Requirements
  • Interest in working with diverse populations
  • Strong communication and/or mediation skills 
  • Flexible schedule
  • Post secondary experience in the Human Services field an asset

Greenhouse Coordinators - Group Volunteer Opportunity

The City of Edmonton is looking for a group of green thumbs to assist with the coordination and operation of the greenhouse located in the ACT Aquatic & Recreation Centre in Edmonton's beautiful Rundle Park. This is an exciting opportunity to help develop a thriving greenhouse and assist with special events, workshops and activities for the community with the support of City staff.

Requirements

  • Organization should focus on horticulture in some way
  • Should currently involve volunteers (have knowledge and experience when it comes to working with volunteers)
  • Should have a designated Project Coordinator who is willing to act as the key group representative
  • Must commit to a one year term
  • Organization should be Edmonton-based

Work in an outdoor greenhouse, meet people of all ages and backgrounds, and increase your knowledge of Edmonton's history while working with period plants.

Requirements
  • Ability to work independently and lift up to 50 pounds
  • Greenhouse experience
  • Interpretive experience and asset
  • Knowledge of local and historical plants an asset

Special Event Assistants

Are you enthusiastic, outgoing, and enjoy being part of an event? Volunteer for exciting and unique events like Spooktacular, Zoo-fari, Free Admission Day or the Coronation Triathlon at City attractions and recreation centres.

Requirements
  • Must be 13 years or older
  • Must be energetic and enjoy interacting with the general public
  • Comfortable working with minimal supervision
Duties
  • Assist with crafts, games, hosting
  • Greet and direct the public
  • Provide information
  • Assist with crowd control
  • Conduct surveys
