Drop-In Skating

Free Drop-in Public Skating opportunities are available year-round for members and non-members of our facilities. Staff and skate assistants are on site during all public skating times. Helmets are not required, but are highly recommended.

Equipment not permitted during drop-in skating includes: strollers, sleds, hockey sticks, pucks, and balls. Please do not bring your personal belongings to public skates.

Types of Public Skating

Drop-in Skate

Our general open drop-in skating times strategically spread across most arenas in the city during various times to provide equitable opportunities. Children under the age of 8 must be actively supervised by a responsible person aged 13+.

Parents and Tots Public Skate

Opportunities available for parent and toddlers (under the age of 6) to either skate freely or allow their tots to play with sticks and pucks. Ice is available during non-peak time.

This opportunity is only for Parents and Toddlers. Toddlers must be actively supervised by an adult. Children & adults must be on skates. Caregivers are not allowed to carry the child.

Older Adult Public Skate

An opportunity designated to older adults during non-peak low volume times providing a safer opportunity.

Public Figure Skating

An opportunity made available for general public to practice figure skating elements and moves, as performing figure skates during other drop-in skates are not permitted. Coaches are not permitted. All ages welcome; children under the age of 8 must be actively supervised by a responsible person aged 13+.  (Please note: Figure skating moves are only allowed during Member Figure Skating and at Drop-in Public Figure Skating.)

Early Morning Fitness Public Skate

An opportunity targeted to adults (18+) with a focus around skating for fitness.

An early morning opportunity for all ages to drop in for skating. Children under the age of 8 must be actively supervised by a responsible person aged 13+.

Member Figure Skating

An opportunity made available for City of Edmonton members (wristbands required) to drop in and practice figure skating elements and moves. Coaches are not permitted. All ages welcome; children under the age of 8 must be actively supervised by a responsible person aged 13+. (Please note: Figure skating moves are only allowed during Member Figure Skating and at Drop-in Public Figure Skating.)

Member Skate

An opportunity made available for City of Edmonton Recreation Centre members or customers paying admission (wristbands required) to drop-in skate. Member skates are also added weekly in between rentals and programming. Check the schedule for updated locations and times. All ages welcome; children under the age of 8 must be actively supervised by a responsible person aged 13+.

Shinny Hockey

Adult Shinny

Opportunities for drop-in play scheduled at various locations and on various days. Membership or drop-in fees apply.

Child/Youth Shinny

Opportunities during the Summer months for youth (ages 6 - 17) to play "pick up" hockey. Review guidelines prior to attending. Membership or drop-in fees apply.

How to Participate

Arrive at the arena and visit the front counter to purchase admission or scan your membership card. You will be given a wristband and shinny ticket, and then you can go to the skate monitor and sign in (maximum 45 minutes prior to program start time*). Even if you obtained a wristband prior to 45 minutes before shinny, you must still line up to register and receive a shinny ticket.

All signed-in players can proceed to the change rooms. Once the capacity of 26 players is reached, there will be no more spots available.

*At Terwillegar, participants can sign in for shinny 1.75 hours beforehand. Payment and registration still occurs 45 minutes beforehand. 

Admission

Shinny is included in All-Facility Memberships. Purchase required if you are a non-member. Purchase of shinny admission gains you full access to drop-in at the facility.

  • Multiple child shinny**(5+) $6.50
  • Single youth shinny $9
  • Multiple youth shinny**(5+) $8.10
  • Single adult shinny $11.50
  • Multiple adult shinny**(5+) $10.35

** If purchased in multiples of 5 or more.

Shinny admissions must be purchased in advance at the facility's admissions desk. Prices are subject to change.

Maximum 26 players, not including goalies. Full equipment is required, including shoulder pads, helmets, and mask or visor.
